Chapter 17

“We’re establishing a perimeter around the camp! I want sentries staged within visual distance of one another all the way around the Brick! Everyone keep your comms on, monitoring the main frequency, as well as a secondary frequency for dedicated sentry communication.” Clara stood at the top of the stairs, speaking into the audio system we’d moved outside. Across the clearing in front of us, the full contingent of Mythics, with the exception of the children, stood shoulder to shoulder, dressed and armed for a confrontation.

Clara scratched at the pale skin of her wrist where the cast impressions could still be seen.

“I want rotating 3-hour shifts, through the night, if need be. If you encounter anyone, do not engage! Stay within the boundaries of the Brick, notify us on the main frequency, and maintain the perimeter.”

She looked out over the crowd of helmeted heads and green shoulders. Apparently, the liquid armor suits also had color-shifting pigments that allowed them to camouflage. I had no idea. The group gathered below the lodge was covered in dark green camo patterns. The matte covering of the visors of their helmets made it seem like a crowd of giant, attentive bugs, all armed with at least two different firearms.

“We’re going to make it through this. Without abilities, we hold every advantage. We know they’re coming, we have the element of surprise, and we have the home field. Today, we make this man pay for our friends, our brothers, our sisters, who he took from us!”

“I believe it’s ‘whom,’” Heretic said quietly behind me. I stamped on his foot. It hurt my heel.

Clara raised her rifle above her head. “For Safeguard!”

“For Safeguard!!” The words were roared back at her, and nearly two thousand rifle barrels shook at the sky.

Clara switched off the microphone and handed it back to Henry.

“Beautiful,” he said. “How many times did you have to repeat that to yourself in the mirror this morning?” He grinned.

Clara ignored him. She turned back to the crowd and put on her helmet. Opening the visor, she said, “Signal check. High sign if you can hear my voice.” She raised her hand in a thumbs-up sign. The crowd reciprocated, every thumb pointing to the sky.

“Affirmative. Dismissed.”

The crowd dissipated rapidly back to the camps.

Henry raised his eyebrows. “That’s all you need to tell them? No organizing schedule, no roster, anything like that?”

Clara shook her head. “We train for this. Each camp has a captain who will have already divided everyone up into fireteams of 6, and they’ll rotate through the six for sentry duty over the next 18 hours. We’re good.”

Heretic nodded his approval. “For all our differences of opinion over the past several years, I can’t deny that your efficiency is impressive. Well done.”

Clara nodded without smiling. I wasn’t sure how she felt about Heretic at this point.

Sammy and I stood at opposite ends of the deck, not looking at each other. Everyone was wearing their liquid armor, as well as the plates to protect against Tamers.
